Independence

The United States just celebrated Independence Day. This is my favorite holiday of the year. It’s filled with so many of my favorite things-sunshine, fireworks, bbq’s and lots of friends. I really believe that the way this holiday is celebrated would be congratulated by our founding fathers. I think they would be proud of the fact that this day is celebrated by being with people we love, taking a relaxing day off work and enjoying our nation.

I also wonder though what would have happened in the old days if the United States had never been under English rule. What would our nation have been built on for instance if the Declaration of Independence never needed to be written. What would our core values be? Would we have such a strong value for freedom and rights if we had not had to fight and die for them? And how would America have been founded without the help that England gave? Our foundation was built on the back of the English and then we desired to jump further, hence the breakaway. Now I’m not saying I believe we need to remain under tyrannical rule, nor am I saying I believe our founding fathers were in the wrong. As much as I love England and the accent, I am thankful and proud to be American. I do not believe we are of more value but I am thankful to have been born and raised in the United States. My point is this, Independence can only be celebrated if at first we have dependence.

For many years I was dependent upon alcohol and pills to get me through my week. I was dependent on people liking me in order to feel ‘happy’. I have come to hate those dependencies and thankfully Jesus has given me freedom from those and others. That freedom I experience, or the independence from those addictions I more fully realize when I think back on what held me.

Are you struggling to feel free? Are there things that you feel in bondage to? Jesus came for us to experience abundant life. Now. He has given us the opportunity to live a life of freedom from the tyrannical rule of the enemy. Come to Jesus and experience Holy Spirit and the Father’s unconditional love in your life.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
